Subject: Cubans in the UK demand an end to the US blockade.
Once again, on 31 October this year, the Republic of Cuba will present the resolution: Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba to the United Nations’ General Assembly.
In 2017, the United States and Israel were the only countries to vote against the resolution, among the 193 UN member states. We thank the British government for voting against the US blockade that has caused countless economic and human damages for nearly 60 years – and we hope Britain continues to support the Cuban resolution.
At the same time, we ask the British government to enforce its own regulations that prohibit the extra-territorial imposition of the Blockade in the United Kingdom; that is, Order No. 3171 adopted in 1996 relating to the Protection of Trading Interests Act on ‘The Extraterritorial US Legislation’, which enables the British government to penalize any natural or legal person complying with extraterritorial aspects of the US blockade on British territory.
The extraterritorial imposition of the US blockade in the United Kingdom is more frequent every year, affecting not only Cuban citizens but also British or UK-based institutions. The list of companies affected by the imposition of the blockade is extensive, just to mention a few: PayPal, Stripe, GoFundMe, Eventbrite, The Open University, M&S, The Co-operative Bank, HSBC, Santander, Barclays, among other banks and financial centers tied to the United States.
The 13th Meeting of Cuban Residents in Europe took place in Brussels on 20th and 21st October 2018, attended by delegations from throughout the European Union, including a delegation of Cubans living in Britain. The event concluded by strongly condemning the United States hostile policy towards Cuba carried out by the US, specially the current policy applied by the administration of President Donald Trump against Cuba. The participants demanded the closure of the Guantanamo Naval Base and the return of this territory to Cuba, the non-intervention in internal affairs, as well as the need to put an end to the US blockade that has so badly affected the development and welfare of our country.

With the leadership of the new President, Miguel Díaz-Canel, our country is debating a new Constitution, a process of consultation with all Cubans living inside and outside of the island. The popular consultation takes into account all the proposals that will be taken to constitutional referendum.
The association Cubans in the UK supports the sovereign right of Cuba to determine its future without foreign intervention in its internal affairs, and we demand the end of the US blockade against Cuba.
We hope you will once again stand in the best interests of the Cuban people who demand an end to the US blockade. We look forward to your response.
